PUPPY LOVE
By Julie A. Dawes
She was a baby when she found her master;
The love they shared was made in heaven.
He was her friend, provider, and comforter;
She knew her wrongs would be forgiven.
To her master, she remained obedient,
And she was filled with adoration.
He loved her and they were content;
But a fear of her's brought destruction.
She felt safe when her master was home;
But when he left, she was filled with dread.
She felt forsaken and started to roam,
Thinking that he hated her instead.
Fearful and sad she roamed the hillside;
In a strange place now -
Sounds and sights left her terrified;
But she had to make it on her own.
Who's going to love her? No one's around!
What could she eat? Where could she stay?
Suddenly, she heard a familiar sound.....
Her master's home! She's safe for today!
Filled with joy, she ran to her master -
Overwhelmed with love and glee.
You see, he was only gone an hour;
But that hour for her was agony.
Years went by and the puppy grew older,
But she never got rid of that fear.
When he leaves, her heart grows colder,
Until his soft voice, she would hear.
Her master loved her and gave her food;
He brushed out her coat of ebony.
She licked him with love and gratitude,
Loathing her insecurity.
He'd pick her up and her wounds he'd heal;
He'd tell her he's here to stay.
That her life here was grand and ideal,
If she'd only keep from going astray.
One day, he was gone too long;
When he returned, no dog came by.
Without a doubt, something was wrong;
For when he called, there was no reply!
For hours he called and looked around;
But no dog came, and he was shaken.
Finally he saw her, dead on the ground;
Down a steep hill -
He picked her up gently and held her close;
Tears streamed down as he grieved.
"I'd never leave you", he said with morose.
"If you had only trusted me and believed!"
"Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? But seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for tomorrow: for tomorrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto this day is the evil thereof." Matthew 6:31-
